Design Bridge Amsterdam Summer Away Day
Four arrests, two acts of deliberate vandalism, six frogmen and widespread transvestism. It can mean only one thing: DBN’s summer away day.
We were split into teams and sent into Amsterdam on a mission to reinterpret the squares on a special Teamopoly Monopoly board, armed only with a pen, a fifty-euro note and a small bag of birdseed. The most creative and inspiring responses would win an evening at one the best restaurants in the city.
Some teams played the strategy game – marking potential opportunities on a street map, planning timings and storyboarding their approaches before leaving the DBN offices. Some teams took a more ad-hoc and opportunistic approach, basing the route loosely on a sequence of nice pubs.
Team Dog took to one of Amsterdam’s many legal graffiti walls having decided that the ‘Spot some street art’ challenge would be underserved by the world-class talent already on display in the city. Had they picked the wrong wall, they would have completed the ‘Go to jail’ challenge with some style too.
We all ‘crossed the water’ and met the ‘Queen’, some of us ate at the ‘king’ and many more enlisted Amsterdam’s finest for help with voluntary incarceration.
The day ended in the old First Class lounge at the central station, where a team of judges scored our contributions based on creative merit, and on their level of bitterness at having been left at the office to look after the business while the rest of us had fun.
Team Boat (early favourites, having a competitive dream-team of Joost Lindeman, Zayne Dagher and Alex Halfpenny) came out on top. That they won was no surprise; the eagerness with which Alex put on a bikini to clinch the title was more of an eye opener.
We then took a Supper Club cruise, for a delicious meal, superb music and some truly awful dancing. Being served fried goats cheese with vanilla ice cream by a young lady wearing nothing but electrical tape and an onion bag was a fittingly surreal end to an unusual and rewarding day.
