Here are this week’s favourite things in the world of art, design, branding and great ideas:
Cake Britain: where art meets cake
A few of us went along to the opening night of Cake Britain, the world’s first entirely edible art exhibition that opened last night at The Future Gallery in London. Each edible creation has been produced by the Mad Artists Tea Party group and included a wedding cake called Cloud Cuckoo, sugary burgers and chips with faces and a huge stags head! A lot of fun with brandy punch being served in kitsch teacups and saucers and meringues flying above our heads attached to helium balloons just waiting to be munched. We also got the chance to experience a ‘Vegan’ cupcake or two which sounds horrible but were actually amazing. Hannah would even go as far to say, it was the best cupcake she’s ever had…! See more on Ms. Cupcake’s website.
Sponsored by Tate & Lyle, all proceeds go to Richard House, We Make Peace and the Fairtrade Foundation. It runs from 27-29 August.
Thanks to Claire for pointing the Magpie to these lovely Art-Deco inspired Penguin anniversary editions. The designs span six of F Scott Fitzgerald’s books, to mark the 70th anniversary of the writer’s death. They were designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith, one of Penguin’s in-house senior designers and will launch on 4 November. Found via Creative Review Blog.
We’re intrigued by the notion of Power Bands – the magic pill or just another marketing ploy? Can wearing something on your wrist make you more powerful or successful? Is it more about the power of celebrity suggesting that holographic magic works or is it a simple case of mind over matter? More on Brandchannel.
Loving the fact that someone in Portland Oregon has painted Mario Kart-style Power-up symbols on a bike lane. If only they worked, we’d all get to work a lot quicker and it would be so much more fun it could even stop abuse between fellow cyclists – or friendly competition? Can we have them here in London as part of Boris’ new bike scheme? Mind you, it could cause chaos when someone spins out of control when they hit the banana…
