Friends on Friday Favourites
This week’s Friday Favourites is a special ‘Friends’ edition, which celebrates the work of our creative friends and acquaintances. You could look at these examples as us shamelessly plugging our mates’ work, but we just see it as sharing the love and spreading the word on inspiring people ;-)
Emma Smith – Illustrator/maker
Chris’s illustrator friend Emma Smith created these rather lovely beer illustrations as part of a project she did with agency 93ft, for a branding project for the Oast House in Manchester. She has a fantastic and diverse spread of work including some amazing bird illustrations, and some fantastic ceramics – check out more on her site – Emilou Makes. I particularly like the crow illustrations and the mad-looking ceramic cat bauble, personally.

JMG Studio and their work with the Typography Workshop
Holly’s boyfriend Jon is a designer and letterpress artist/printer, and prints as part of JMG with his friend Ross Shaw. Jon also assists Alan Kitching in running his Typography Workshops.
JMG’s Flickr site shows a detailed glimpse into the weird and wonderful world of letterpress
Aakash Nihalani – artist
Grace A’s friend Aakash Nihalani is a New York-based street artist who does tape art to create interesting delineations and emphases in urban space. He worked recently on the Lacoste Live campaign which was shot by Cobrasnake, and he’s also worked on installations in the NYC Facebook office as well as the first Das Racist album cover. He will also have a solo booth at the upcoming HK Art Fair.
Gemma Correll – illustrator/maker
Hayley’s friend Gemma Correll is an illustrator whose work sometimes features pugs and cats (which is always a good thing in my view). I was also pleased to see that you can buy some of her stuff through her site. I love the humorous style and personality in her work, which not only covers illustration, but includes typography, pattern, and murals, as well as comic strips.
Although the style is slightly different, it reminded me of the illustrations and sense of humour around the ‘Little Birds’ illustration work of Kate Wilson, who I commissioned recently to do my wedding invite (and who was a pleasure to work with :-))
Rob Vanderplank – photographer
And finally, we thought it would be nice to share Ian’s friend Rob Vanderplank‘s award-winning photography, which includes amazing still life shots and startling portraiture, as well as slick packaging photography work. More examples here.
