It’s that time of year again. No, not Christmas (although that is most definitely on its merry way), it’s time for Pantone to announce what colour has been selected as Colour of the Year. Described on Pantone’s Instagram as “A dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, #UltraViolet communicates originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking that points us to the future”.
2018 is set to be all about this rich, dramatic purple. Hover over the Instagram film below and click/tap the play button to see the big reveal…
You can find out more about Ultra Violet, plus how and why it was selected, on the Pantone website.

Did you know that there’s a new character coming to the iconic Mr. Men and Little Miss line up next year? Step forward Little Miss Inventor!
Announced earlier this week in Stylist Magazine, Little Miss Inventor is described as “intelligent, ingenious and inventive”. She will not conform to traditional gender stereotypes and aims to inspire girls to become more involved and interested in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), all of which are industries where female representation is still low.
Little Miss Inventor will appear in her first book next year, which will be published on International Women’s Day (8 March 2018). Thanks to Helena for sharing the story.
Sometimes, just sometimes, we all need to disappear into our own imagination. Artist Renaldo Kuhler spent over 60 years doing just that, creating an imaginary land he named Rocaterrania. Renaldo drew and documented every aspect of his unique world, even creating an alphabet and language. After making a documentary about this incredible body of work in 2009, Brett Ingram has now published a book on Kuhler’s work, The Secret World of Renaldo Kuhler, and here’s a sneak peak at some of the beautifully intricate wonders you’ll discover inside…
You can read the introduction to the book and see more images on It’s Nice That – thanks to Georgie T for sharing the story.

We love a bit of paper craft here at DB, and this week our favourite find on Instagram is @icarus.mid.air, the account of Cristian Marianciuc. A self-confessed “origami enthusiast”, Christian set himself a challenge to create a different origami crane each day for one year. But once he hit day 365 he decided to carry on creating, and has now made 1,000 exquisite hand-crafted paper birds, all of which have been shared on his Instagram. Here are a few of our favourites (to be honest, it was hard to pick just a few):

To end this week’s Favourites we wanted to share the LaCie In My Element film competition, which our very own Charlie H has entered two of his amazing films into.
You can see all of the films entered this year on the competition website. Good luck Charlie!
