We’re already more than halfway through the year, the sun has been shining (intermittently), and it was time for our New York team to set sail for their annual Summer Away Day. Here’s Gregor Johnstone, a Designer who is usually found in London but currently spending some time in our New York Studio, to tell you all about it…
The day kicked off over a mound of black and white pizza boxes, filled with our new local slice – ‘& Pizza’. After lining our stomachs ahead of the forthcoming adventures, we embarked on the first challenge of the day – getting taxis through the center of Manhattan at noon. Not letting this dampen our spirits, we enjoyed some car-aoke with songs featuring sailing, boats and the high seas (a big shout out to David Grey and The Beach Boys). This was the first clue as to nature of the activity to come…
With the dress code set as ‘Shades and Stripes’ and the nautically-themed music, most of us had already guessed what we might be doing, but all was confirmed when we arrived at a port on the East River. After stocking our yacht with supplies, we were on our way.
Our captain took us on a route down the East River and out to the Statue of Liberty, where we dropped anchor and soaked up the views.
After a couple *ahem* of drinks, we headed back up the river to the north of Manhattan, where we were treated to amazing views of the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building. Then, with a few slightly dodgy manoeuvres and a few spilled drinks, we turned around and headed back to land.
Our next stop was the Plunge Rooftop Bar in The Gansevoort Hotel. Despite what the name suggests, we found out pretty quickly that the pool was off limits, but the drinks continued to flow and we enjoyed our team day out long into the night… and that’s all that I can remember!
