What we’re listening to this week #69

A New Hope

It’s a new year. Clean slate. Blank sheet of paper.

(Maybe not too blank, otherwise you’ll have nothing to look forward to.)

Past WWLTTW lists have included the making and breaking of Resolutions and ways to help you find the resolve to stick to your goals. But this isn’t one of those motivational, self improvement blogs – I don’t want you to consign it to the trash because it’s getting preachy or thrusting inane inspirational quotes down your throat.

WWLTTW’s policy is to promote the Slacker Mentality™ because some of the best ideas and creative thoughts come when you’re doing nothing at all, and there’s plenty of other inspirational speakers to whip you into a frenzy of success, ambition and winning in general.

Instead, I’ll start gently so that this list doesn’t get in the way of all the other plans you’ve put in place for taking over the Galaxy.

Thinking about a new home in the sun? Neil Young – After The Gold Rush:

A year of firsts? Roberta Flack – The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face:

This year could be a good time to increase your diet of guitar noodles and cold dishes of Metalish angst. Alter Bridge – Brand New Start:

This is proof that inspirational songs aren’t always delivered with evangelical fervour. Try reading some of those quotes with a sneer. Muse – Feeling Good:

“It’s totally new for all of us, you know?
I’ve nothing much to offer
There’s nothing much to take”

David Bowie – Absolute Beginners:

You know I would and if I was yours, but I’m not. Arcade Fire – Ready To Start:

When you get to the bottom, you have to go back to the top and start all over again. Siouxsie And The Banshees – Helter Skelter:

Need a new start? It’s really not my habit to intrude. Furthermore, I hope my meaning won’t be lost or misconstrued but I’ll repeat myself at the risk of being crude. Paul Simon – 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover:

Don’t like what you put on that blank sheet? Edwyn and pals are campaigning to put the eraser manufacturers out of business. Orange Juice – Rip it Up:

My fitness regime? I used to ramble through the park, shadowboxing in the dark. Frank Sinatra – I’m Beginning To See The Light:

I don’t want to bring you down or anything but there are those who claim that 2016 set us up for disaster. R.E.M. – It’s The End Of The World:

OK, you really want inspirational? You can’t handle the inspirational! Rudimental – Waiting All Night ft. Ella Eyre:

“It doesn’t matter if we never meet again
What we have said will always remain
If we get through for two minutes only
It will be a start”

The Jam – Start!:

That’s quite enough positivity for one week. I’ll get back to bringing new music, brand-related sounds, musicscapes and soundtracks to you soon.

Okay, goddammit – I admit it, some of it will be downright inspirationalised!

Hallelujah, Brothers and Sisters!!
