Our Thursday night talks ‘At the Bar‘ invite talented individuals to inspire and enlighten. Recently we had the chance to meet the first ever author ‘At the Bar'; Abdelkader Benali.
Richard, our in-house photographer, captured the evening for us below.
Abdelkader Benali, is one of the Netherlands leading prolific writers and journalists. Author of ‘Bruiloft aan Zee’ and the successful Morroccan cookbook Casa Benali and winner of the Libris Literature Award. In addition to novels and plays, Benali has published essays and reviews in respected international newspapers and magazines including New York Times and The Guardian.
For a language that is often quickly described to foreigners as being “too difficult” by native speakers, Abdelkader was not deterred. With an eagerness to embrace the country his family migrated from Morocco when he was four years old. Control of the language is often noted in his many award winning novels, inside and out of the Netherlands.
With a desire now to connect with the land that he left over 35 years ago, reengaging with the roots of his parents an idea came about that he could do it with a twist. In a manner that we love at Design Bridge – looking beyond the obvious to discover the essence.
Thus Benali’s first culinary work project; Casa Benali “is a storybook” he passionately tells us. While, his wife Saida, takes the reader on a journey of discovery of Moroccan cuisine sharing culinary secrets of childhood favourite recipes. Benali evokes memories, through his own rediscovery of the country, as he takes our hand walking us though the exciting alleys of the souks…. Perhaps this could be the ultimate literature experience, “food for thought” if you will.
While they say that you should not write on an empty stomach, one can certainly read. Thanks for sharing Abdelkader. We look forward to immersing ourselves in the experience!
