The making of our Dog’s Bollocks Student Awards Posters 2017

“It’s a shit brief.”

We certainly hope that this is not what design students think about this year’s Dog’s Bollocks Student Awards competition, but we do hope that some of you have spotted one of our brand new posters around your university halls and are in the process of putting your entry together. You never know, this time next year it could be YOU designing the 2018 poster…

For 2017 we’ve kept the competition brief the same as last year (you can get the brief here), so we challenged the junior members of our London team to come up with an idea for a poster to help promote the competition at universities and inspire design students to enter.

“Said no award winner ever” was the winning idea,  a tongue-in-cheek copy-led poster design based on all the wrong advice – what your tutors wouldn’t say to you, all the things you shouldn’t do, and how not to make award-winning work. The copy lines have been crafted to stand out, grab people’s attention and make them look twice. It’s only when you get up close that you discover what it’s all about.

The creative idea is the result of a collaborative effort between Georgi (on our Client Servicing and Strategy Graduate Scheme), Beth (came to us via D&AD New Blood last year), and some special helpers from all over the Studio, all overseen by Asa, Creative Director at DB London and the driving force behind our annual student competition.

As Asa recalls, ” When I was at university there were lots of posters up on the walls that had been there for years, and this is what inspired my brief to the Studio juniors. Obviously we wanted to make something that was well-executed and beautifully crafted – just like we are asking students to do when answering the brief – but we also wanted to make something that people would want to keep, something of value, with timeless advice.”

The posters were designed using our own brand identity guidelines, with 7 copy lines and 4 colour combinations agreed upon. It was then time to visit our friends at local letterpress studio New North Press to help us bring them to life. Each poster was set and printed by hand before being individually hand-numbered (a lot of hands were used in the making of these posters).

The result is 25 unique sets of 3 posters that have been sent out to universities to build extra awareness around our competition, and encourage a bit of competitive (and creative) spirit amongst design students.

So, to recap: don’t nick your idea from Pinterest, put in some effort, and push yourself and your design to do something that really grabs our attention and makes us look twice.
