There’s no place like home, and what better way to explore each of our DB homes than by asking a local to give you the lowdown on the best places to eat, drink, socialise, and soak up some creative and cultural inspiration.
First up we’re in our USA home of New York City. Here’s Katie to tell us about her favourites haunts in and around the surrounding area of our brand new Studio…
Good morning! First things first, where are we getting our coffee on the way to the Studio?
My favorite place to get my morning caffeine fix before work is Stumptown Coffee Roasters. They are located in the Ace Hotel lobby right on 29th street (just two blocks away from Design Bridge).
The space is inspiring in itself, with a mixture of art and architectural details in this turn of the century building, so I usually get a good start to the morning alongside my (iced) latte.
Time for lunch. What are we eating?
I’m constantly discovering new places for lunch. New Yorkers love to eat. We are located in a great area for food – Flatiron District, Madison Square Park and Union Square. Lunchtime is usually determined by deadlines so, if it’s crunch time, we go for Mulberry & Vine. It’s LITERALLY downstairs, so you can run down and be back up in the office in approximately ten minutes. This place has a great variety of healthy options without draining your bank account. Win win.
If the weather is co-operating and you feel like treatin’ yo self, we like to walk over to Shake Shack in Madison Square Park. This is a burger kiosk that is situated within the park with great outdoor seating. They are popping up all over the city, but this one is the original. Shake Shack is quite popular so the line is usually absurd but, thankfully, there is the “Shack Cam” so you can gauge when it’s the right time to head on over. At night it’s quite pretty with string lights dangling from the trees. What could be more magical than devouring a burger, fries and a strawberry milkshake under the stars? Hmm, nothing.
If we’re feeling fancy, we like to have a sit down across the street at The Smith.
This restaurant has a lovely atmosphere with bistro classics and tasty, craft cocktails. I usually have the East Village Passion (a rum punch) paired with the Cavatelli (a short rib ragu with pasta) #nom. If it’s a beautiful day I like to request a table by the opened doors, facing the street, catching a breeze.
Favourite place for creative inspiration?
New York as a whole is such an inspiring place. Walking around people watching, the street art, looking up at the architecture details on all of the various buildings – probably my favorite source of inspiration.
I’m constantly finding something new and I’ve been around this city my entire life. You can always find me photographing my findings and cataloguing it for later. This is why I chose to live here, I’m constantly surrounded by what inspires me. One of my favorite spots in the city to wander is SoHo. The pre-war charm and cobblestone streets get me every time.
Where will you find the team after hours?
As we are patiently waiting for Oscar Wilde, the bar downstairs, to open we like to have after work drinks at Live Bait. This eclectic bar is located in the Flatiron District, right across from Madison Square Park. You are immediately transported to the South with themed vintage signage and memorabilia plastered all over the interior. They have a great selection of beer, liquor and comfort food – cornbread, gumbo, mac and cheese and other southern favorites. It’s become part of the initiation to bring visiting DB-ers here…
And finally, what are you getting us as a treat?
If a few of us are craving a treat, we like to indulge in a handcrafted doughnut from Doughnut Plant. They come in all shapes, sizes and flavors and they are AMAZING. My favorite is the strawberry or the original glazed. There are only two stores in Manhattan but luckily you can find these guys offered in coffee shops around the city, like Stumptown. We also like to have these doughnuts for client meetings, and for welcoming a newbie. I knew this was a great place when I joined DB just from the selection of doughnuts!
